Cleaning Solutions for Kay Pictures Products

Are you looking for some guidance on how to clean our Kay Pictures products?

We have collected a few tips below on how you can keep our vision testing products clean in-between uses while ensuring their quality is not compromised.

In general, soap and water, anti-bacterial and alcohol-based cleaners, and wipes are all suitable to carefully use on our products.

For Covid-19 infection control, soap and water should be applied for at least 20 seconds. For application times of other cleaning solutions please refer to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Kay Picture Test Books

The encapsulated front and back covers of the books are fully sealed, edge-to-edge. The covers can be cleaned with an anti-bacterial agent or perhaps even an alcohol-based cleaner. The only area where this plasticised covering is compromised, is at the holes for the spiral binding, so extra care should be taken to not allow liquid to leak into the holes.

The inner pages are laminated and not sealed at the ends. Any liquid that penetrates underneath the laminate will eventually discolour the pages and potentially lead to the sheets de-laminating at the edges. Anti-bacterial wipes could be used very carefully, whilst paying close attention not to get the edges too damp.

The same advice applies to the HRR Colour Vision Test book.

Kay Picture Screening Chart

The Screening Chart is made from HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene) which is a lightweight plastic and can be cleaned carefully with soap and water.

Kay Fixation Sticks

All our fixation sticks can be wiped clean with most cleaning solutions apart from solvent-based cleaners.

Kay Matching Cards

The Matching Cards are fully encapsulated in plastic and can be cleaned with an anti-bacterial agent, soap and water or an alcohol-based cleaner.

Kay Near Test Cards

Our Near Test Cards are laminated and not sealed around the edges. Any liquid that penetrates underneath the laminate will eventually discolour the pages and potentially lead to the sheets de-laminating at the edges. Anti-bacterial wipes could be used very carefully, whilst paying close attention not to get the edges too damp.

Kay Fun Patches

Our fabric patches for both adults and children should be hand washed with mild detergent in cool water and air dried to maintain their shape and appearance. We recommend to hand wash them regularly.

Occluding Glasses

Our occluding glasses are made of Polycarbonate and are best cleaned with soap and water. Other cleaning solutions can cause the plastic to break. If in doubt, please contact the cleaning solution manufacturer for guidance.

The same advice applies to the Miraflex trial frames.

Cardiff Acuity Tests

The Cardiff Test cards are not laminated but do have an aquaseal applied to them which does allow for the cards to be cleaned by using a light application of an alcohol based liquid/hand sanitiser. Apply a small amount onto a soft cloth and gently wipe. Do not use a detergent.
Please see below for a video that shows how to clean the cards.

Frisby Stereo Tests

The Frisby Stereo Test plates are made from acrylic and can be cleaned carefully using a soft cloth and gentle detergent. Do not use solvent-based cleaners and avoid coarse cloths as they may scratch the plates.
